Mystic Islands Forever - Java Game

If there was ever an RPG game that was labeled the "perfect RPG game" ever, in terms of gameplay, then Mystic Islands Forever (MIF) comes absolutely close to it. A great concept packaged into a small game, MIF certainly impresses.

The storyline goes that an evil magician has opened a portal into hell, and demons are rushing from there into the world. And a hero is needed to save the day. Yes, the usual good guy kicks bad guys butt. Pretty linear storyline there, no twist or turns, nothing that will make you gasp in surprise or scratch your head in bewilderment. So if you're looking for a pretty cinematic mobile game, Mystic Islands isn't your cup of tea.

However, if you're looking for a great strategy game, that will give you great character building flexibility, then this is it! Mystic Islands is very much the RPG, as in you can train your character as a warrior (by far, the most boring character to play with), an archer (using ranged projectiles) and a wizard! (Now that's more like it!). Of course, you can even choose to even mix up your character's attribute to make some sort of hybrid. Maybe mixing a few wizard stats with hero stats and skills, you can call him a paladin? Whatever your want, Mystic Islands gives you total freedom to develop your character. There's also a great tutorial to guide you through on the game's mechanics if you're lost.

And this of course gives you a totally superb replayability factor. You can play over and over again, and develop your character differently each time. You can even change the difficulty setting, to make it more challenging. I would recommend though, saving as often as possible. As far as I can see, there's no way to shake off a monster once you've started attacking it. And if you're losing and you've run out of potions, you'll have to start from where you last saved.

Unfortunately, so much of the game has been dedicated to gameplay, that the graphics and music leaves much to be desired. Graphics is something you don't see everyday, and I definitely don't mean it in a good way. Sure, it may be sufficient enough to enjoy the game, but considering how much better it could be, it is a definite let down. It reminds me of a PC game Runescape, only much worse. Many times I can't even IDENTIFY the monster I'm fighting with! Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it a goblin, an orc, or a leprechaun?


And the music and sounds isn't much better either. A simple midi tune accompanies you as you examine the main menu. That's about it. In terms of in game music, there's a tune every time you speak to someone, or exit the map into a different "area". Which is repetitive, and not to mention more than a little annoying. Bad enough that I decided to play the entire game on silent mode. There's absolutely no grunting of your hero, no sound of swords clashing, or monsters screaming in agony as you hack them to bits. And there's no vibration either in case you were wondering.


Fortunately of course, the gameplay is good enough for you to overlook this. After all's said and done, I for one would definitely be playing this game again, and again.
