Nokia Sensor v2.33


The new sensor by Nokia. What it does is it enables sensor users to set up their profile on their phones and at social gatherings, sensor users can detect each other, view each other's profiles, send each other messages and then if everything works fine, finally meet up. This application works via Bluetooth.

FAQ's for your reference.

General Questions

1. Can I use the Nokia Sensor application to communicate with non-Nokia Sensor phone users?
Not quite, as the majority of Nokia Sensor features require both parties to have Nokia Sensor installed and running. You can still send some simple Sensor messages and media files to phones and PDAs with Bluetooth wireless technology without the Nokia Sensor application, but the software is much more useful and exciting when all parties have it running.

2. Can I use other Bluetooth wireless technology applications with Nokia Sensor?
Yes, but keep in mind that using Bluetooth wireless technology for other simultaneous applications, including enhancements with Bluetooth connectivity, might have an effect on the performance of Sensor.

3. Do I reveal my phone number by communicating with other Sensor users?
Each active Nokia Sensor user is identified based on a unique Bluetooth identification number assigned to their phone. This way, you can discover and communicate with other Nokia Sensor users nearby without having to know their phone numbers. You can make your number visible in your folio if you choose, but this is not mandatory.

4. How do I change the language of my Nokia Sensor application?
The Nokia Sensor application is supported in approximately 12 languages. Select your language when downloading the installation .SIS file (see Download section). The installation file will probably contain more than one language. If your phone is set to one of the languages in the .SIS file, it will be automatically chosen.

If the installation process cannot find your currently set phone language in the installation file, you will be asked to choose among the available languages during the installation process.

Unfortunately, the Nokia Sensor application does not automatically switch languages when you switch the language of your phone. To change languages you will have to reinstall the application. Go to the Download section to check if your language is supported. Then select the correct language file you want to install and install Nokia Sensor again, 'on top of' your older Nokia Sensor application (see Installation).

5. Does the use of Nokia Sensor application shorten the battery life of my phone?
It might, depending on how you use it. Your phone consumes more power when you are calling than when you are not. Similarly, communicating with other Nokia Sensor users will use up your battery faster than without such communication. If you are concerned with your battery's operating time, turn off automatic features as Sensor alert and Buddy alert to minimize power consumption.

6. How much memory does Nokia Sensor require on my phone? I'm running out of memory!
After installation Nokia Sensor and its middleware (’Proximity Toolkit’) consumes approximately 1.3 MB. In addition to this, more memory space may be required as you may gradually accumulate content in My Collection, Message log, Guestbook, and so on. The size of such data varies depending on the content (such as whether they contain images or not) so estimations are difficult to give. If your phone is running out of memory but you do not want to lose Nokia Sensor content permanently, use the ’Export content’ functionality to transfer Nokia Sensor data to a compatible PC.

Troubleshooting

7. My Sensor application does not start. What’s wrong?
Most likely, the Bluetooth communication of your phone has broken down and Sensor is no longer able to start it up again. To verify if this is the problem, launch your Bluetooth manager application, marked with an or icon. If Bluetooth is set to OFF and you are unable to set it ON again, try restarting your phone to make the Bluetooth connectivity and Sensor work again.

8. The Sensor application does not start if installed in German.
On some phone models, version 2.22 of Sensor (June 2005) did not launch if installed in German. Install Sensor 2.33 or later versions and German Sensor will run fine.

9. I know that one or more Nokia Sensor users are nearby, but I cannot find them when I scan or try to them send Nokia Sensor messages.
There are several reasons why Nokia Sensor communication may not work with certain users. First, they may have closed down (exited) Nokia Sensor application. To access folios and communicate with users, they need to have Sensor installed and running. All users also need to have the Bluetooth settings turned ON and 'shown to all. To check these settings, go to your Bluetooth application on your phone, marked with an or icon.

Second, they may currently be using the Bluetooth wireless technology in their phone for other purposes, such as actively scanning with Nokia Sensor or sending media files. If so, such users may be unavailable for your Nokia Sensor communication request. Try scanning again after a while.

Third, a user may have put you on their block list. This means that you do not have access to their folio and can't communicate with them, even if they are running the Nokia Sensor application. They cannot see your folio either.

Fourth, if you still can't find or communicate with other users, the Sensor middleware might have closed without your awareness (typical error messages include ’App. closed srcs’ or ’App. closed ptkit server’). In these cases the application may seem to be running normally but no communication is possible. In this case, restart your phone and try again.

Fifth, but not least, Sensor version 2.33 (July 2005) includes improved scanning performance and visibility of users' folio. If you are running an earlier version, we strongly recommend you to upgrade - for free of course. To check version number, launch Sensor and then select Options -> About. Download the latest software release, and re-install Sensor.

10. My Sensor folio is not visible to others or other users have difficulties sending Sensor messages to me, even though I am running Sensor.
First, make sure your Bluetooth technology settings is turned ON and set to ’shown to all’. To check these settings, go to your Bluetooth application on your phone, marked with an or icon. Note that some phone models automatically turn Bluetooth OFF when choosing ’Offline’ in Profile application (marked with an icon).

Second, make sure your phone is running Sensor version 2.33 or later. To check version number, go to Sensor main menu -> Options -> About. Download the latest software release, and re-install Sensor.

If you still have problems, just restart your Sensor application to become available again.

11. When I scan I get a ’System error’ message?
This probably means that your Bluetooth has been turned OFF or not working for some reason. Restart your Sensor application and scanning should work fine again.

12. I want to leave Sensor running all the time in the background, but for some reason it automatically exits now and then. What's wrong?
Some early versions of Sensor had difficulties in running for long times in the background. Make sure you are using Sensor version 2.33 or later. To check version number, launch Sensor and then select Options -> About. Download the latest software release, and re-install Sensor.

13. Sensor does not work when using ’Offline’ profile. What's wrong?
Some phone models makes use of ’Offline’ profile in the Profile application (marked with an icon on your phone). ’Offline’ turns off all radio connections of the phone, including setting Bluetooth to OFF. In order to scan and communicate with other Sensor users, Bluetooth technology settings need to be turned ON and set to ’shown to all’.

Installation

14. If I uninstall the Nokia Sensor application, what happens to my personal content such as My Folio, My Collection, and Nokia Sensor Logs?
If you uninstall the application, all your personal content related to Nokia Sensor application will be deleted from your phone, except the downloaded media items from other Nokia Sensor users. If you want to archive your personal data prior to un-installation, you can use the ’Export content’ feature.

15. What happens to my personal content in the Nokia Sensor application if I reinstall it?
You may want to reinstall the Nokia Sensor application to change languages or to upgrade to another software version. In such a case, simply reinstall the application without removing the existing application.

NOTE: If you want to keep your personal content in the new installation, you need to select the same memory location as the previous installation (MMC or phone memory). To check the memory location of your current Sensor installation, launch the’Application Manager’ (marked with an icon in your phone), and view the details of your Nokia Sensor installation.

16. What is ’exporting content’?
By exporting you can store and view your Sensor content (from My Folio, My Collection, and Sensor Logs) on a compatible PC. The export content function can be accessed from several places, including from Options in the Sensor main menu. When exporting, the Sensor application creates one .zip file containing all selected contents, and sends it to your compatible PC using infrared or Bluetooth wireless technology, depending on the capabilities of your phone. To extract the .zip file, you may need additional software on your PC. You can view extracted content with a compatible Web browser.

Exporting content copies - not deletes - content from your phone. Also note that once exported, the content cannot be imported back to the mobile phone.

17. Why do I get a ’File corrupt’ error message after downloading the Sensor installation file directly over the air to my phone via my web browser, after which installation is aborted?
Some operators limit the maximum size of downloaded files from their WAP gateways, which means that only part of the installation file is downloaded causing the error. Change your browser's access point and try again, or instead fetch the application to your phone via www.nokia.com/sensor and your compatible PC.
