About ABBYY Lingvo 12 Smartphone for Symbian OS™

ABBYY Lingvo 12 Smartphone for Symbian OS™ is an electronic dictionary for smartphones operating under Symbian OS v. 7/8/9 (series 60 platform).
You can install any number of system dictionaries on your smartphone. You can also install user dictionaries created in the desktop version of ABBYY Lingvo.
System Requirements

1. Operating system: Symbian OS v. 7/8/9 (series 60 platform).
2. Memory:

• 1 MB in main memory to store program files and for normal program operation;
• 9-285 on a memory card to store dictionaries;
• 140 MB for the sound files.

Installing and Running the Program

Installing the Program
We recommend using software for smartphone synchronization supplied with your smartphone.
To install ABBYY Lingvo 12 Smartphone for Symbian OS™ on your smartphone:

1. Place the ABBYY Lingvo CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive of your desktop PC;
2. Run the software for smartphone synchronization and make sure that the smartphone is communicating with the desktop PC;
3. Use Installing applications module to install the file which corresponds to the operating system of your device. The files are located in the following folders on the ABBYY Lingvo CD-ROM:
   • \ABBYY Lingvo 12\Symbian OS\S60\lingvo_s60.sis for Symbian s60 v7/8
   • \ABBYY Lingvo 12\Symbian OS\S60_v3\ lingvo_s60_v3.sis for Symbian s60 v9.1
4. Follow the instructions of the setup program;
5. Use the File transfer module to copy the desired dictionaries from the Disk1\ABBYY Lingvo\Dic folder into the ABBYY Lingvo\Dic folder on a memory card.

To install ABBYY Lingvo 12 Smartphone for Symbian OS™ without using the software for smartphone synchronization:

1. Use a Card Reader device or a third-party application to save the file corresponding to the operating system of your device onto a memory card:
   • \ABBYY Lingvo 12\Symbian OS\S60\lingvo_s60.sis for Symbian s60 v7/8
   • \ABBYY Lingvo 12\Symbian OS\S60_v3\ lingvo_s60_v3.sis for Symbian s60 v9.1
2. Use the same method to copy the desired dictionaries from the Disk1\ABBYY Lingvo\Dic folder into the ABBYY Lingvo\Dic folder on the memory card;
3. Use the File Manager to locate and launch the file on the memory card:
   • lingvo_s60.sis for Symbian s60 v7/8
   • lingvo_s60_v3.sis for Symbian s60 v9.1
4. Follow the instructions of the setup program.

Running the Program
To run ABBYY Lingvo 12 Smartphone for Symbian OS:

1. Press the menu button on your phone;
2. In the main menu that opens, select ABBYY Lingvo and then press the centre of the navigation key to confirm your choice.

Removing the Program

To remove ABBYY Lingvo 12 Smartphone for Symbian OS from your smartphone:

1. Run the App. manager on your phone (main menu>Tools>App. manager);
2. In the list of available applications, select Lingvo and then select Options>Delete;
3. In the File Manager of your mobile phone, browse to the ABBYY Lingvo\Dic folder where you installed the dictionaries and remove the dictionary files by selecting Options>Delete.

Main Window

Main window elements:

• The word list displays the alphabetically arranged list of words from all the enabled dictionaries for the current translation direction. Use the navigation key to browse the word list. Alternatively, you can start typing the word to jump to it in the word list.
• The search field is the field where you can enter a word or phrase to translate. ​
• Selecting the Options button (or pressing the left selection key) opens the main window menu. ​
• Selecting the Exit button (or pressing the right selection key) closes the program. ​

Card Window

A card displays the translations of the word or phrase you typed in the search field and additional information about the word or phrase.
The title bar of the card displays the name of the dictionary in which the card has been found and the translation direction.
Note: Thedigits under the name of the dictionary designate the number of the current dictionary/the total number of dictionaries in which the word or phrase has been found.
Heading. Displays the headword of the entry.
Entry. The entry may have several zones:

• Translations zone - Displays the translations of the headword and its transcription.
• Examples zone - Displays illustrative examples for the headword and its strong collocations, if any.
• Comments zone - Displays grammar and usage labels, grammatical forms, synonyms, antonyms, and comments.

You can use the navigation key to navigate the text in a card. Use the number 2 and 5 keys on the numerical pad of your phone to thumb through the text of the card. Place the cursor on a desired word in the card and press the centre of the navigation key to view its translation. For a full-screen view of the card, click *. To return to the default card size, click this button again.
Note: To search for a word or phrase in the text of the card:

1. Select the Options button(or press the left selection key) and on the card menu that opens, select the Find command (or press the 7 key on your smartphone);
2. In the Find dialog box that opens, enter the word to search and press OK.

Selecting the Options button (or pressing the left selection key) opens the card menu.
Selecting the OK button (or pressing the right selection key) closes the card window and switches back to the main program window.

Program Options

In ABBYY Lingvo 12 Smartphone for Symbian OS you can select and change program options as you work.
How can I change the current translation direction?
To change the current translation direction:

1. In the main program window, select the Options button (or press the left selection key);
2. On the main window menu that opens, select the Direction item and then press the centre of the navigation key;
3. Select the desired translation direction from the list and press the centre of the navigation key to confirm your choice.

How can I select the dictionaries I need?
Lingvo will look up a word only in the active dictionaries for the current translation direction.
To enable/disable a dictionary:

1. Open the Dictionaries dialog box (Options>Select dictionary);
2. In the dialog box that opens, select the desired translation direction and confirm the selection by pressing down the navigation key;
3. In the dialog box that opens, select the name of the dictionary you wish to enable/disable and then select Options>Disable or Options>Enable accordingly.

Important!
For smooth operation of the program, we do not recommend enabling more than 7 dictionaries for each translation direction.
How can I change dictionary priorities?
To change the priority of a dictionary:

1. Open the Dictionaries dialog box(Options>Select dictionary);
2. In the dialog box that opens, select the desired translation direction and confirm the selection by pressing down the navigation key;
3. In the dialog box that opens, select the name of the dictionary whose priority you wish to change and then select Options>Move Up to raise its priority or Options>Move Down to lower its priority.

To view brief information about a dictionary, select the dictionary and then select Options>About dictionary.
Looking Up Words and Phrases

ABBYY Lingvo 12 Smartphone for Symbian OS will look up words and phrases in the enabled dictionaries for the current translation direction. You can look up a word or phrase:

• by selecting it in the word list
• by selecting it in the card

ABBYY Lingvo 12 Smartphone for Symbian OS translates words and phrases within the current pair of languages.
Using the word list to look up words and phrases
To browse the word list:

1. Use the navigation key to select the desired word or phrase in the list;
2. Press the centre of the navigation key to confirm the selection.

Note: you can start typing the word to jump to it in the word list.​

Looking up words in the text of a card
If you encounter an unfamiliar word in a card, you can look it up immediately.
To look up a word you have encountered in a card:

1. Use the navigation key to select the desired word or phrase in the text of the card;
2. Press the centre of the navigation key to confirm the selection.

Note: For a full-screen view of the card, click *. To return to the default card size, click this button again.
Installing/Removing Dictionaries

We recommend using the software for smartphone synchronization supplied with your smartphone. To install ABBYY Lingvo 12 Smartphone for Symbian OS™ dictionaries on your smartphone:

1. Place the ABBYY Lingvo CD-ROM (Disk1) into the CD-ROM drive of your desktop PC;
2. Run the software for smartphone synchronization and make sure that the smartphone is communicating with the desktop PC;
3. Use the File transfer module to copy the desired dictionaries from the ABBYY Lingvo\Dic folder located on the ABBYY Lingvo CD-ROM into the ABBYY Lingvo\Dic folder on your memory card. The ABBYY Lingvo\Dic folder on the ABBYY Lingvo CD-ROM contains:
   • Dictionary files. These have the extension .lsd (e.g. ReligionRuEn.lsd is the Russian-English Dictionary of Religious Terminology). Copy the required dictionaries into the ABBYY Lingvo\Dic folder on your memory card. Some of the dictionaries may be provided with a dictionary of labels. These also have the extension .lsd and their name is made up of the name of the related dictionary followed by _abrv (e.g. ReligionRuEn_abrv.lsd is the dictionary of labels for the Russian-English Dictionary of Religious Terminology). Be sure to copy the accompanying _abrv.lsd dictionaries onto the memory card as well.
   • Folders with dictionary index files. These are required for PCs only. Do not copy these folders onto the memory card.

Important!
By default, all the dictionaries you have copied onto the memory card are enabled. However, we do not recommend enabling more than 7 dictionaries for each translation direction to ensure smooth operation of the program. Once you have installed the program and copied the required dictionaries onto the memory card, be sure to check the number of enabled dictionaries in the Dictionaries dialog box (Options>Dictionaries).
Tip. We recommend using the Essential dictionaries which can be found in the \ABBYY Lingvo 12\Dic\PDA folder on the CD-ROM.
Note: For optimal performance we recommend that you do not install more than 4 dictionaries.
To remove dictionaries from a memory card:

1. In the File Manager of your mobile phone, browse to the ABBYY Lingvo\Dic folder where you installed the dictionaries;
2. Remove the dictionary files by selecting Options>Delete.

Installing/removing the sound files

You can hear the most common words in LingvoUniversal (En-Ru), Universal (De-Ru) and Universal (Fr-Ru) pronounced by native speakers.
We recommend using software for smartphone synchronization supplied with your smartphone. To install the sound files:

1. Place the ABBYY Lingvo CD-ROM (Disk1) into the CD-ROM drive of your desktop PC;
2. Run software for smartphone synchronization and make sure that the smartphone is communicating with the desktop PC;
3. Use the File transfer module to copy the desired sound files from the Disk1\ABBYY Lingvo\Data folder into the ABBYY Lingvo\Data folder on a memory card:

• SoundD.dat – sound for Universal (De-Ru);
• SoundE.dat – sound for LingvoUniversal (En-Ru);
  [*]SoundF.dat – sound for Universal (Fr-Ru).

To remove the sound files from the memory card:

1. Use the File Manager to locate the ABBYY Lingvo\Data folder where the sound files were installed;
2. Remove the sound files by selecting Options>Delete.
