Symella 1.40 is released. I've added the long awaited "default network connection setting", hopefully it will solve the popping up access point dialog issue. The webcache support has also been improved. Symella queries the caches for addresses of other webcaches and you can edit the list of webcache addresses manually through the settings as well.



Symella is a Gnutella client for Symbian smartphones. Gnutella is a popular Peer-to-Peer file sharing network with several users from all around the world. (for PC Gnutella clients check this site).

Symella supports multi-threaded downloads which means that if multiple users have a particular file then Symella can download the file from several locations simultenously.

Main Features

* Follows Gnutella 0.6 draft
Most things that could be solved on this mobile platform are in it. Handshake, standard Gnutella messages, Pong caching, connecting, querying, downloading (except Push messages). It doesn't have a sharing subsystem though, it has no sense having one on a small platform like Symbian - it concentrates on searching and downloading. It has no GGEP or HUGE implementation, just plain Gnutella messages.

* Uses GWebCache
As the draft suggests, it uses GWebCache, hostcaching and a primitive message caching to make communication easier.

* Search
Does the search by the book - collects files with the same hash into one result, resulting in faster download later.

* Swarming
Uses swarming technique for downloading - splits the selected file into more small parts, and downloads them simultaneously - faster and more effective than the one-threaded download.

* Multiple downloads
Only one search can be active at a time, but multiple downloads can run in the background, even from different searches.

* Open downloaded file
Open the downloaded file with the corresponding program, if available (MP3 player, picture viewer, etc)

Best Birthday is a useful utility that helps you to organize and to view anniversaries in a handy way: monthly anniversaries view of contacts found in Calendar and Contacts applications, ability to perform fully customizable export of anniversaries from Contacts to Calendar and much more.



Anniversaries view

Best Birthday is fully integrated with built-in Calendar and Contacts applications. It collects all anniversaries found in Contacts and associates them with records in Calendar.



You can easily customize order, in which you'd like birthdays to be shown. This can be done with the help of menu command "Sort by":

• Order ascending / descending;
• Sort by name;
• Sort by date;
• Sort by days left;
• Sort by months left;
• Split by month - lets you devide all birthdays into months. All the birthdays of a chosen month will be shown on one page, to change current month just press Left/Right arrow;

How to add a birthday:

All data about a birthday is stored in Contacts.
In order to add a birthday to an existing contact choose command New from contact.
If you want to add a birthday date but you don't have a corresponding contact use command New to create a new contact with birthday date




How to add Calendar reminder:

Best Birthday lets you add Meeting reminder in your Calendar. When you add a calendar you can configure the following settings:

• Start time;
• Alarm enabled / disabled;
• Days before;
• Alarm time;

Note: If you want to add a lot of records in calendar at one time use command Mark all from menu Mark.


Some useful features:

• Thumbnail image - shows a little image associated with the chosen contact
• Find birthday (hot key: 5) - lets you easily find any contact by name or surname
• Find next birthday (hot key: Pen+5)
• Go to today - finds the closest birthday to the current date
• Refresh contacts - refreshes contacts, happens every time Best Birthday starts

Windows Live Search for Mobile Beta - JAVA





Microsoft has released a beta version of its Windows Live Search For Mobile.
The application provides the basic set of features you would expect from a mobile search client.

The application has an integrated mapping feature so that you can get driving directions to and from search objects.
This functionality feels and looks as a lesser version of Google Maps. I think my main objective is just that - the application feels like second class.
