It is very easy to miss the initial sound of an incoming message or a phone call especially if the smartphone was in another room at this moment, in a leather wallet or in your jacket when you're in a car or at the street. If you don't want to check the display constantly to ensure that you haven't missed an important phone call or a message you might be waiting for then you need to try Best Reminder.

Best Reminder provides repeating alarms and visual notification to draw your attention to received but unnoticed messages and missed calls.

How it works

* 1. You have got a missed call or a message.
* 2. Some time passed (Remind period) and you didn't pay attention to missed event(s) yet.
* 3. The reminder checks if it's good time to notify or it's late night, for example (Time restriction in configuration).
* 4. If it's good time it shows "You have" window on the screen and plays alarm sound.
* 5. It repeats alarm sound after some time passed (Remind period) again and again (Remind period) until it brings your attention to the unnoticed event(s).

Setup and configuration

To use Best Reminder you should install and start the application, then configure the needed options (select the reminder sound you like, repeat interval, etc) and activate it. When Best Reminder service is activated there is no need to keep the application opened. You can close it not to waste your device memory.

Options:

* Reminder - Shows if the Reminder service is working currently or not.
* Remind about missed - Allows you to select which event to monitor and remind about unnoticed
* Remind period - If you have a missed call or a new sms and you didn't hear the initial sound (and didn't check for a missed call or a message) then Best Reminder will show "You have" window and will play alarm after the time specified by you passed and will repeat the alarm with specified interval until you notice it.
* Alarm - The application will play the selected sound in order to bring your attention to a missed call or a message.
* Time restriction - Of course it would be highly annoying when you receive a message at night and Best Reminder notifies you about it the whole night. That's why you can set up period when the application is allowed to notify you only (set "Time restriction" to 'yes' and in "From" and "To" fields fill in the period when the application is allowed to notify you).

Behind the screen

* Best Reminder is smart enough to notify about new incoming messages or missed calls only and doesn't annoy you when there's already noticed by you, but unread messages or missed calls.

* When you activate the service it remembers the current state and notifies you only on new events. Also if you've got, for example, 1 missed call and 1 unread message, then read the message only the program assumes you have seen all unnoticed events, saves the current state and will notify you on NEXT new missed events only.

* Best Reminder notifies you with your device backlight off. It doesn't turn the display on not to waste your device battery. It just powers on the speaker device, plays sound, and turns it off.

* When Best Reminder plays alarm sound it uses your current profile system volume. So if you use Silent profile or Outdoor one with maximum volume Best Reminder respects these settings.

* When Best Reminder is activated you can close the configuration application. Also it DOES NOT HAVE any daemon, service, or some module working constantly in background at all! Best Reminder uses latest Windows Mobile API - State and Notifications Broker to do the job. In simpler words, our application makes persistent requests for change notifications and when, for example, you have got missed call the system shell will start Best Reminder module just for a moment, for it to analyse the situation, do the job and instantly close itself, until started by the system shell again only when it is needed. So it doesn't waste your battery life running at background all the time, no need to worry that some 3rd party taskman will close it or your device will be restarted.

Each of us collided with necessity to close the program for clearing memory for other programs or quickly switch between programs or see the started programs. Windows Mobile does not have convenient means which can help us with this. Elecont Pocket PC and Smartphone manager will give to you a fast and convenient way of management of your device. You can control your device only in two clicks -- open programs, close all except this or close all. In addition you'll always have the main indicators like overall memory usage and battery and memory usage for each program.

Elecont Pocket PC and Smartphone Manager displays memory and battery indicators on the left. To close all programs please click on the indicators. It causes the manager to display two icons. The left one (red cross) is intended for closing all programs. The right one is for the Elecont Pocket PC Manager options dialog. The left icon may be hidden when no programs are running.

The options dialog is intended for online purchase and activation and for changing icon size and adding programs to exclusion list.

The exclusion list hides running programs from home/today screen. It is useful for the programs which are running 24 hours (for example Instant Messengers ) The programs from exclusion list are won't be closed when the Close All programs icon is pressed.

The running programs are displayed after the memory and battery indicators. Each icon has own memory indicator which displays program's memory usage. Clicking on program's icon you can open or close it. Right after you click the manager is displaying two icons. The left one (the red cross) close the program and the right one (green arrow) shows the running application. The secondary click on application icon will replace the left icon to red cross with green circle. Click it to close all programs except the current. This functon is very useful when you need to give maximum memory to this application.

OpenVPN for SP



Summary
I produced a port of the OpenVPN to support PocketPC devices as a client. This activity consisted chiefly of:

Producing a port of the TAP virtual NIC driver.
Accommodating for the lack of many standard runtime routines in the CE environment.
Producing a 'management' application which provides user-interface to control VPN connections.
I did this because I wanted it personally, and because there apparently wasn't another similar effort underway. It is my hope that this might be of use to others as well. This has not been merged into the official OpenVPN code base, but that will happen when I get the bug volume low enough to liberate some time.

I would like to invite anyone interested to download the files, install, and play with it. There are some known issues, and I'm quite sure that there are many unknown ones as well! Far be it from me to delight in bug reports, I am interested in receiving these from the field in the interest of more rapidly converging on a quality level than I could hope to achieve operating as an individual developer. I do believe that it is genuinely usable even despite these limitations

I managed to install and run OpenVPN for PPC on my S710 smartphone. I'm sure it will also work on other WM5/6 smartphones.

Here are the steps to install:
1. Make sure your device is unlocked, otherwise unlock it with Microsoft Security Manager
2. Unzip the attached .zip and copy the OpenVPN directory to \Storage Card\Program Files (you can choose another path but then you will have to modify two shortcuts in \Windows\Start Menu
3. Copy the Windows directory to \ (don't worry, it only adds two files in \Windows and two shortcuts in \Windows\Start Menu)
4. Copy the two registry files form the Registry directory to your device, e.g. to \My Documents and register them. To easily do that, I recommend Resco Registry editor)

To use OpenVPN you must of course have an OpenVPN server where you can connect to. Furthermore you need to create a config file and save it as "smartphone.ovpn" to \Storage Card\Program Files\OpenVPN\config
I have put there an example file which contains a line to write a log file "client.log" to \Storage Card\Program Files\OpenVPN\log. The log file helps you to debug any connection issues.

If you want to connect to your OpenVPN server, first fire up your Wifi or GPRS/Edge/UMTS. Now start the OpenVPN Connection manager, return to the Home screen and start the OpenVPN client by clicking on the white icon in your Start menu (sorry, I didn't bother to create or link it with a nice icon ...). The VPN connection will be established on top of your existing data connection. I noticed that it is sometimes necessary to tweak connection settings in the browser (toggle from Internet to Work or vice versa. It requires some experimenting to get the hang of it).

If you want to disconnect then click on OpenVPN Connection manager and select the VPN tab. In the bottom-right corner you can see just a little part of a button. Use the D-pad to select that button (the border line will become bold if you selected it) and click it. This will send a terminate signal to client and release the TAP network interface.

My mobile operator blocks VoIP ports so I mainly use an OpenVPN connection to tunnel VoIP traffic through an Edge connection
